Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing A.S. Roma’s defender Kostas Manolas as a long-term replacement of club captain John Terry, who plays at the heart of their defence, Daily Express reports.
The Greek international has long been on the radar of the Premier League Champions, and there were reports that Roma knocked back a bid from Chelsea on the deadline day.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho tried to sign highly rated Everton centre-back John Stones last summer, but Everton were reluctant to sell and knocked back four bids from the Blues.
Chelsea ended up signing Nantes defender and Senegalese international, Papy Djilobodji, on the deadline day.26-year-old is yet to play for the club despite the club conceding 17 times in the first eight games this season. It is understood that Mourinho wasn’t happy with the purchase of the player and is reluctant use him.
Manolas has been in excellent form since joining Roma from Olympiacos in 2014. Upon arrival at the club after the world cup, Manolas quickly established himself as a key member of the club and went on to feature 30 games in the first season. The defender has started all the seven League and Champions League games this season.
Chelsea are expected to table an offer for Manolas in January transfer window.
